We are grateful for their commitment to our students, staff, and families, and we thank them for their continued service to Wanaque.
At last night’s Board of Education meeting, 8th-grade Student Representative, Sophia, shared an update on what’s happening at Wanaque Elementary School.
Public speaking isn’t easy, and Sophia did a wonderful job. These are the kinds of real-world learning experiences we work to build into our schools—experiences that help students grow in confidence, communication, and leadership.

We also welcomed our newest Board of Education members, Barry McCloud and Jessica Geyer, and thanked them for their willingness to serve. We are excited to have them join the Board and look forward to the perspectives and ideas they will bring to the district.
Nothing better than music, community, and a little festive flair 🎄🦌

This October, we proudly celebrate Principal Tara Scognamiglio, a leader whose energy, compassion, and vision continue to shape the heart of Wanaque School. With more than 20 years of experience in education—including roles as a classroom teacher, special area teacher, technology coach, and assistant principal—Tara brings a deep understanding of teaching and learning to her role as principal.
Tara has always been a natural leader. “When I was young, I was called bossy,” she says with a smile, “but I learned how to use my assertive personality to lead others.” Today, that leadership shines through in her commitment to building a positive, supportive environment where students and teachers can thrive. She finds the greatest joy in witnessing student growth and helping teachers develop their craft.
What makes Wanaque School truly special, Tara says, is its strong sense of continuity and belonging. Most students spend nine years together, growing up in a close-knit, family-like community. Tara nurtures that environment through clear communication, shared goals, and celebration—whether it’s honoring students of the month, spotlighting staff achievements, or greeting families every morning at drop-off.
This year, Tara is most excited to see her staff flourish as 21st-century educators who put students at the center of learning. She defines success not just by data, but by the happiness and pride of her students, staff, and families. Her advice to aspiring principals captures her approach perfectly:
“Education is always evolving—stay flexible, find great mentors, and build strong relationships.”
We’re grateful for Principal Tara Scognamiglio’s dedication, optimism, and heart. She leads by example, reminding us that great schools are built on strong relationships, shared purpose, and a deep belief in what’s possible.

This October, we proudly celebrate Principal Brett Biggins, a leader whose steady presence, integrity, and compassion continue to strengthen the heart of his school community. With 16 years of experience in education—including roles as a teacher, coach, vice principal, and now in his third year as principal—Brett brings a calm, thoughtful approach to leadership grounded in collaboration and care.
Brett’s journey into school leadership began with a desire to make a meaningful difference. “When the opportunity arose, I felt called to do more—to help ensure that our students and staff experience consistency, stability, and follow-through,” he shares. Today, that sense of purpose guides his work every day as he builds a school culture rooted in fairness, trust, and teamwork.
What makes Brett’s school community truly special, he says, is its warmth and inclusivity. “Whether a student has been here for one year or eight, they’re embraced immediately,” he explains. That deep sense of belonging is what sets his school apart—a place where every student feels connected and supported. Brett fosters this environment through clear communication, consistent expectations, and celebrating both staff and student successes.
This year, Brett is especially excited about his work as an instructional leader for Kindergarten through Second Grade math, supporting teachers as they strengthen foundational skills and use data to guide instruction. He defines success not only through measurable outcomes, but through the growth, collaboration, and confidence of his students and staff. His advice to aspiring principals reflects his steady and thoughtful approach to leadership:
“Lead with patience and fairness. You don’t need all the answers right away—be honest, admit mistakes, and always put students first.”
We’re grateful for Principal Brett Biggins’s calm leadership, deep commitment, and heart for his students and staff. He leads by example, reminding us that great schools are built on trust, collaboration, and a shared belief in the potential of every child.

Meet Mr. Mendez! With over 20 years of experience working with children in a variety of educational and recreational settings, he has spent the last six years teaching physical education full-time in Newark—a role that brings together his passion for movement, teamwork, and student development. In his spare time, he enjoys coaching his two boys in their sports activities.

I am writing to share an update on the principal search process and to introduce the new Principal of Wanaque School.
We began the process with a strong pool of 61 applicants, including 41 individuals with prior administrative experience. With valuable input from both teachers and administrators, we conducted a thorough review of all applications and moved forward with initial interviews. From this group, we identified four finalists who advanced to the final round.
Each finalist participated in a 60-minute performance-based assessment focused on instructional leadership, followed by a one-on-one interview with me. During the interview, I explored each candidate’s leadership philosophy, expectations, and overall readiness for the role. I also conducted reference and work history checks with colleagues who had worked closely with each candidate. These conversations were instrumental in highlighting the unique strengths of each finalist and ultimately helped clarify who was best suited for the position.
After a comprehensive evaluation, I am pleased to recommend Mrs. Scognamiglio as the next principal of Wanaque School.
Mrs. Scognamiglio brings a powerful combination of experience and familiarity with the Wanaque community. Her understanding of our school’s needs, along with her ability to make thoughtful and informed decisions, will be invaluable. She is widely recognized as a master teacher and brings with her the instructional expertise and coaching skills to support our teachers and enhance classroom practices.
The interview committee consistently described her as a poised, articulate leader with a clear vision and specific goals for Wanaque School. Her priorities—discipline, instructional leadership, and community involvement—reflect what our school needs most at this time. She was praised for being approachable, reflective, and a strong communicator who listens before acting. One committee member noted, “She is already a respected member of the Wanaque community and has demonstrated a strong understanding of the school’s needs.” Her visibility in classrooms, commitment to inclusive practices, and ability to support teachers stood out to everyone involved in the process.
While Mrs. Scognamiglio is still early in her administrative career, her potential is extraordinary. I am confident she will grow into a strong and impactful school leader. I look forward to working closely with her and providing the support and mentorship she needs to be successful in this new role.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support as we take this important step forward together.
Warm regards,
Matthew J. Murphy, Ed. D.
Interim Superintendent
